Get your geek on with the Coach Space limited edition capsule collection
To infinity and beyond
Coach. The name so pregnant with heritage, it naturally leads to an undercurrent of nostalgia. This might explain why Stuart Vevers' journey to his Jurrasic Park days last spring clawed its way to the wardrobe of old and new fans alike. Since Vevers, the executive creative director who is a nominee at this year's CFDA Fashion Awards in the category of Accessories Designer of the Year, introduced Rexy to his audience, she has gained her icon status — starring in her own commercial, film, and an exclusive collection designed and named in her honour were good plays. Steadily, Rexy has transformed from an unlikely, pop-fuelled mascot of Coach, to the heart which pulse beats through the American brand's post-Reed Krakoff era.
Not one to curtail a winning formula, Vevers shuttles his pet dino to space this pre-fall — but she is not meant to stay in the limelight. NASA is. Calling all dreamers, Coach's limited edition capsule collection, code name Coach Space, has landed. It maps a handful ready-to-wear pieces, bags and accessories for men and women, all embossed with galatical motifs.
Fan-favourite Dinky and Saddle bags are built in glovetanned leather and embellished with the Milky Way, while Apollo rockets, among other leather patches land on the Rogue and Gotham totes. What of little Rexy? Her main enterprise is on t-shirts and bags, but she makes a special appearance as an astronaut on a brave mission aboard the League backpack (or should we say, jet pack?). The collection travels away from familiar territory too, exploring two new silhouettes — the Dylan bag, a contemporary take on '70s flight bags and the aforementioned League backpack, reminiscent of school bags from the '80s and '90s.
"The collection is very nostalgic," Vevers told press. "There's something about the time of the Space Program that just gives this feeling of possibility. The space references, rockets and planets are symbolic of a moment of ultimate American optimism and togetherness."
Pardon us for describing this collection "as out of this world".
