The thing about most pop culture references is that they exist and expire in a specific time frame. Rarely do they make it out alive, much less awarded a place of significance in years to follow — even amongst those old enough to remember how shook they were once upon a decade. Millennials are unlikely to understand the relationship between a cassette tape and a pen, differentiate Larry David from Larry King or know what the Watergate is.
Music has stronger staying power. Sure, your average teen isn't going to be able to recite Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' verbatim, nor will they have a clue as to what Elvis Presley's favourite snack was (answer: a peanut butter and banana sandwich), but we all get warm fuzzy feelings when The Beatles' 'Here Comes the Sun' and 'Twist and Shout' come on the radio.
Well, we do, along with Stacey Bendet of alice + olivia. And it's no coincidence the designer is responsible for making alice + olivia the first womenswear brand to partner with the English rock band for a capsule collection.
The exclusive line offering ready-to-wear and accessories features The Beatles' hit songs, interpreted in design via alice + olivia's signature quirk. Iconic to the band, the Abbey Road album cover, is transformed into an embellished shift dress while its opening track, 'Come Together' takes a turn for the splashy as a heavily sequinned bomber jacket. Equally playful is the hand-beaded ball gown skirt pleading 'Love Me Do' and portraits of the band members screen-printed à la Andy Warhol.
Here for the classics? Pledge your allegiance in the white denim jacket with The Beatles logo embroidered on the back, or any one of the novelty sweaters and statement tees reminding us of some of the best music of our time.
