Celebrity menswear trend: Pink suits and outfits from A$AP Rocky, V from BTS, Harry Styles, and more
In the pink
It would be reductive to cast men wearing pink as a subversion of traditional gender stereotypes. Concepts of masculinity and femininity run far deeper than colours, and it's widely acknowledged that blue was once the feminine option, and pink the masculine (they inexplicably Freaky Friday-ed sometime around the '60s). When it comes to the red carpet, however, subtlety tends to go out the window; actors butch up to burnish their leading man reputations, and actresses rely on frills and sparkle to appeal to the generally conservative masses.
That having been said, an increasing number of male celebs are rejecting the status quo by embracing pink as a fashion statement. Unsurprisingly, a good number of them — shoutout to Billy Porter, RuPaul and Queer Eye's Karamo — hail from the LGBTQI+ community, where gay men have long reappropriated signifiers of emasculation. But no matter the gender expression or sexual orientation, there's nothing wrong with men being a little (or plenty) feminine; in fact, the world might actually be better for it. Above, an assembly of our favourite pink-tinted menswear looks from the red carpet.
