An intimate look at Steven Cateron's first collection as Club Monaco's head of design
"Los Angeles is so relaxed and easy — there is a refined elegance to LA style — while New York is so fast and bold," said Steven Cateron of the two cities he calls home. "Bringing the two together creates a really cool mix."
It's not a question whether life in New York, the city that takes all sorts, approaches breakneck speed. But harnessing this electric energy is no mean feat — something Cateron tried his hand at for his first collection at helm. The designer presented the fall 2017 collection during rush hour, elevated 71 floors above the city's morning commute to work in the Four World Trade Centre.
"Women in menswear is everything," he gushed, his fondness evident in the collection's '80s boxy-cut blazers, wide-leg trousers, and crisp, clean shirts. The girlish ruffles on a jumper, sprinkling of floral on frocks, and a pleated, double-breasted jacket-dress hybrid are almost the afterthought. They're safe without being boring, decidedly elegant but still wide open to interpretation — sporting airs of effortlessness and ease. Surely, a strain of Cateron's birth place, Los Angeles.
