Friends of Buro: SG50 interview with Velda Tan

Birthday special

Text: Andrea Sim

Velda Tan confesses that queueing up for food is her Singaporean guilty pleasure. The local dish she'll pay any amount for is…

You know you've met a Singaporean when... you see them holding a bright red passport when queuing at customs, or when you hear the word "shiok" at a restaurant.

My fondest memory from the last five decades is... all the time spent hanging out at King Albert Park (KAP) which was demolished early last year.

I wish Singapore would bring back... the Kampong spirit.

As a Singaporean, I really love to complain about... the weather.

Singaporeans should stop complaining about... the weather because our geographical location is not going to change!

The most underrated thing about Singapore is... our nature reserves.

Every time I return to our island, I appreciate... the safety and the late night hawker joints.

The cost of our country's progress... is the blood, sweat and sleepless nights of our leaders.

The one local dish I would pay any amount for is... black carrot cake.

In 10 years time, I would like to see Singapore... known as one of the top ten fashion cities in the world.

Singapore is uniquely... diverse.

Chicken: steamed or roasted? Steamed. 白鸡胸 please!

Durian: Bitter or sweet? Bittersweet.
