My earliest memory when it comes to fashion and beauty definitely came in the form of raiding my mother's closet. I was probably about 4-years-old when I went on a rampage in her wardrobe, throwing on her lush, printed velvet '90s jacket (which she still has!), tethering in her heeled pumps and smearing her lipstick all over my face. I was a right mess, but it didn't stop her from encouraging my questionable style sensibilities.

Whether she got my clothes from the local market or a designer kids store, I loved almost every single thing she bought for me. Till this day, I credit my foray and interest in fashion to her. And as I started speaking to our friends of Buro. on the interesting connection our mothers have had on our personal style, I realised I'm not alone on this.

From the items they would want to steal, to the outfits that their mums were mildly horrified by, here's what our friends Saffron Sharpe, Nicole Wong, Hanli Hoefer and Chloe Ng have to say.

How has your mother inspired your style over the years?
My mum has always been very comfortable in her own skin, so her style reflects that as well. She has a tomboy-ish relaxed vibe where she would mix feminine and masculine details in her outfits which I also think I adopt when I play dress up!

What's one thing from your mother's closet that you would love to steal?
All her bags! She has a nice collection of unique pieces from Dior to Chanel and Old Celine which I borrow from time to time. I would also love to steal the clothes she had when she was my age as she used to go thrift shopping a lot, but she mostly gave them away when she had me. TRAGGIIICCCCC.

Has there been an outfit of yours that your mother was ever appalled by?
Hahah, so many! I tend to be on the funkier and "sexier" side as I appreciate the '90s aesthetic which she finds very dated. She lets me know her opinions but I tend to ignore them even when she means well!

My icon! :)

Hanli Hoefer, TV presenter, model and radio DJ

How has your mother inspired your style over the years?
I would describe my mother's style as effortlessly elegant. She doesn't shy away from bold jewellery, ethnic prints and a variety of textures. This has allowed me to be more playful and experimental with my personal style. She has a very classy twist to what some would consider "bohemian". There is a worldly essence to her look that I hope to have adopted into my own style. Both of our styles reflect our love of adventure and travel.

What's one thing from your mother's closet that you would love to steal?
Probably a piece of jewellery from her extensive collection. She has art deco type pieces, custom designed sets, vintage Peranakan brooches, big raw gems that have yet to be set into wearable pieces... I'm always secretly eyeing her pieces don't tell her though!

Has there been an outfit of yours that your mother was ever appalled by?
I feel like nothing truly shocks her anymore when it comes to style. I used to have neon pink hair and that didn't even shock her. I think it's because of her background working in fashion once upon a time. In general my household is quite a creative and liberal one so it takes a lot to shock us when it comes to self expression. There never was a time when anything was "too short" or "too low"!

A woman draped with sophistication, mystery and effortless style.

Chloe Ng, socialite

How has your mother inspired your style over the years?
My mother has been the reason why I love fashion so much. She's always been such a fashionista, and that has really rubbed off on me throughout the years. She taught me that no good outfit is ever complete without accessories, and dressing well is a form of good manners.

What's one thing from your mother's closet that you would love to steal?
I would steal her latest Patek Philippe watch as it was exclusively made for Singapore!

Has there been an outfit of yours that your mother was ever appalled by?
Definitely more than one! I'm edgier and more daring than her when it comes to dressing whereas my mother's style is a lot more demure and elegant. Which is why sometimes when I dress up she'll tell me to go change out right away!

Nicole Wong, content creator and co-founder of creative firm @nplusc.co

How has your mother inspired your style over the years?
To never be afraid of colours and dress however you like.

What's one thing from your mother's closet that you would love to steal?
Her jewellery which was passed down from my grandmother to her.

Has there been an outfit of yours that your mother was ever appalled by?
Honestly I don't think so, even though I think I probably deserved [some judgement] when I was younger. But fashion to her was whatever I wanted it to be. To express myself however I like and to just do me.

Finish this sentence: My mother is...
The most forgiving person I have ever met and she taught me to always stay open, positive to everyone and how to forgive. How to live life carefree and to not let the negatives weigh you down.
