Saint Laurent summer 21 by Anthony Vaccarello: Every single look from the collection
Confidence in comfort
Dress for no one else, but yourself. Saint Laurent has shown their hand and released their Summer 2021 Collection by Anthony Vaccarello. The runway show — titled I Wish You Were Here — witnessed a grand backdrop of blue skies and vast sand dunes, a possible timely nod to the faraway landscapes of the globe we're unable to set our eyes on for now.
The desert is a symbol of what Anthony Vaccarello himself wishes to express in this collection: "I wanted to focus on the essence of things. I think it's a sign of the times. But I didn't want anything bleak or heavy. The desert, to me, symbolises that yearn for serenity, open space, a slower rhythm. The clothes are also softer, the spirit of the collection is more gentle, stripped back."
The pieces are strong — in essence. Filled with pure and soft shapes, there is a desire for self-expression and much-needed confidence to face our new normal. But there is also an element of comfort: Vaccarello still takes to lean lines and produces an effect of outlining the body, yet without constricting it. This pared-back notion is expressed through the visuals of a silk blouse worn with rider shorts, slipping on a tunic and trousers, or a vareuse with spacious pockets.
It mixes the sentiment of what we know as dressing for our lives at home now, with the longing for the times when dressing in decadence could be done with no qualm. There is a seductive play on the idea of a dress; as the collection features fanciful, flowy and sheer silhouettes, highlighted by the intimate backdrop of the desert night. Whilst certain pieces are lean and minimal, some are accented with floral explosions of chiffon, fluffy marabout fringes and illuminating jewellery — a selection designed by Claude Lalanne — to dedicate its entirety to the freedom of movement.
