Paris Men's Fashion Week SS16: Umit Benan

A call to attention

A collection heavily inspired by the military might sound like a rigid affair, but Umit Benan triumphs with a multi-dimensional edit

Described by Benan as a "Cuban army", it's hard to miss the palpable military aesthetic that was present throughout the entire show (right down to the models themselves). Tops and outerwear in shades of olive and deep, authoritative blue, complete with shoulder marks and oversized buttons, formed the essence of the collection.

The laidback pieces however, were the markers of a multi-dimensional collection... as it made for a well-rounded representation of the inspiration, going beyond the superficial facet that is no stranger to the fashion spotlight.

With the relaxed ensembles retaining core elements, the collection's undercurrent remained uncompromised throughout. The French cuffs on the pyjama shirt (Look 22) and peak lapels instead of shawl (Look 20) on a lounge jacket effectively elevated casual classics to well, military-influenced casual classics.

An astute tweaking of colour allowed Pinstripes – a corporate stalwart – to shed its straitlaced reputation... as the vibrant shade of blue with a tinge of shine lent the office-appropriate pattern an effortless streetwear edge. We are loving the outerwear in Looks 1 and 3, as they will be great thrown over monochrome or neutrals for a stylish quick fix.

Our favourite piece of the collection has to be... the cream lounge jacket (Look 29). A versatile, elegant and fuss-free leisure piece, popping it over a crewneck T-shirt or thin jumper as shown will have you sorted for the lazy mornings (and evenings).
