Best show from PFW FW17 Day 7: Hermès

Audio review

Audio review of the Hermès womenswear show by editor-in-chief Norman Tan and publisher of Buro 24/7 for Southeast Asia, Bettina von Schlippe

When you hold a fashion show at Palais de Chaillot with the stunning Eiffel Tower just across the River Seine, you better make sure that your collection is strong enough to capture your audience's attention — lest they get distracted and marvel at the Paris landmark dominating the view from every window. Luckily for Hermès, designer Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski delivered a vivid and joyous offering that encouraged the maison's customer to embark on an adventure. Think: Hooded shearling leather jackets, plush wool beanies, and knee-high boots sporting thick lug soles. Clearly, for fall/winter 2017, the Hermès lady is going glamping. However, call me old-fashioned, but my favourite looks were those that played to the house stereotypes: That gorgeous printed silk top and skirt in vivid bottle green; those thick studded leather belts cinched over dresses; and for a playful print, the closing top and dress with a red and purple cupped hands, reaching skyward. Why hands? Surely a nod to the storied handcraftsmanship of the house — a celebration of the hands (and people) that go into creating Hermès objects. Objects that we'll hold onto for life.
