To put it simply, the cruise shows have earned a reputation for being nothing short of epic. Like the fantastical craftsmanship that commands the couture shows, the resort calendar is unmistakable for its spectacular locations and extravagant, immersive show sets. Last year, the maison whisked its inner coterie into the countryside on the Dior Express to witness the 2017 collection at the glorious Blenheim Palace — complete with an evening at The Lady Dior Pub. Maria Grazia Chiuri at helm sees a journey to the west.
Assembling at the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve in Calabasas, there was no doubt Chiuri's Dior looked to capture the spirit of the wild, fierce and free for cruise 2018. A voyage inspired by predecessor Christian Dior's Ovale line in 1951, which in turn took its cue from the paintings of the Paleolithic Lascaux cave situated in southwestern France. Take that, and combine it with Chiuri's own fascination with Clarissa Pinklo Estés' Women Who Run with the Wolves and voila, the vast, untamed, canyon a fitting backdrop to unveil a free-spirited Dior.
Of course, the Lascaux cave paintings bled into Chiuri's resortwear — bearing likeness to its source of inspiration on her signature bustier dresses (look 18) and diaphanous tulle (look 43), along with knitwear, shawl cardigans and A-line ankle-grazing skirts (looks 19, 20 & 50). The designer's telescope into a world far removed from today's bustling metropolis also brought her down the path of isolation. She paid tribute to the women who had embarked on journies of self-discovery amongst nature. Artist Georgia O'Keeffe in New Mexico is likely to have held sway over look 77's embroidery.
Dior cruise 2018 is testimony to the fact that the Chiuri we had come to know and love at Valentino is doing what she does best at her new home — steering the Dior woman out of her comfort zone and taking her to places off the beaten path. Such unrestrained curiosity and wonderment is a long time coming for the house.
