5 places to buy stylish vintage Levi's jeans and denim jackets in Singapore and online
Denim is slowly taking over the athleisure market thanks to nostalgia-loving millennials and It-brands the likes of Y/Project, Off-White and Balenciaga reworking denim to couture levels. Since Vetements' fall/winter 2015 collection featuring re-worked vintage Levi's, there's been a shift in the market from the stretchy and skinny variety to the rigid and vintage.
You'd think since Levi's is synonymous with jeans (and with 165 years of history and product line-up on its side) scoring yourself a pair from the yesteryear is easy feat. Wrong. It's much harder to get your hands on genuine vintage Levi's today because the company launched Levi's Authorized Vintage in 2017, which saw them rounding up 50,000 pairs of dead-stock denim from a crucial source, one man named Jeff Fuller, who collected authentic Made-In-America Levi's jeans from the since the 1970s.
"Levi's has had the number one share of the vintage market forever," said Levi's Chief Marketing Officer Jen Sey. "We just haven't actively participated in it [before], so we think it's high time that we did." Good news for Levi's, bad news for us. Or is it? We've done the work and shortlisted the best places to find vintage Levi's in Singapore and in front of your computer so you can continue to practice upcycling and conscious consumption.
Your hunt ends here.
On top of the Jeff Fuller recall, Levi's has been reproducing its best hits under a vintage line, aptly named Levi's Vintage Clothing. Among the resurrected are 501 jeans; one from 1955, with a boxier silhouette and slightly fuller cut around the leg than the original, similar in shape to those worn by Marlon Brando in "The Wild One"; another is a loose, anti-fit overall made from nine ounce plain selvedge denim and features back pocket with exposed rivets, suspender buttons and a crotch rivet dating back to 1890.
