The poet Kelly (aka Kyle Sullivan) once wrote: "Shoes / Shoes / Shoes / Oh my god / Shoes / Let's get some shoes / Let's get some shoes / Let's get some shoes"... aaaand so on. That iconic noughties number summed up for many the inexplicably straightforward appeal of footwear, which, like male politicians, generally require far less explanation and promotion for people to swallow. Heh.
It's not hard to understand the attraction. Shoes are transportation objects, making going about our busy lives possible — and painless, God willing. They're pretty and tactile, to boot, as our wishlist above attests. They're also, however, very ephemeral, at least if you like pounding the pavement as much as some of us do. Whether we seek to recapture long-lost loves (RIP, that first pair of Nike Flynit Racers), or to discover new dimensions of ourselves (hello, flame-red booties!), a fresh pair of shoes is an invitation to take a geographic and emotional journey; our red packets couldn't come soon enough...
