Good eye

Olsen twin DCI's will be all-too aware of their eye for good vintage: appearing on many a red carpet in pre-loved gowns from Chanel to Givenchy. Now, the fashion moguls are taking their passion one step further, with an "inspo archive sale" on The Row's e-commerce platform.

A quick refresher: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen launched The Row in 2006 (a nod to the timeless Savile Row tailoring in London). The brand quickly gained a cult following; becoming known for their signature high-end, low-key wardrobe staples. A perfect white cotton t-shirt, a black cashmere sweater, or a classic trench, say. "Every fabric we use is of the highest quality we can source," explained Mary-Kate Olsen in a rare interview with the Financial Times, when the twins opened their boutique in London's Mayfair two years ago.

Long-time vintage shoppers, the Olsen sisters know how to find the perfect piece, and often style The Row lookbooks with vintage accessories (their boutiques are also full of antique furniture). But it's the first time they are showing clothes from their personal collection. Mary-Kate Olsen hand-picked around 30 pieces together with a French expert, Marie Blanchet (who, before starting her own business Mon Vintage, was the head of vintage at Vestiaire Collective).

What to expect? There are dozens of Chanel jackets, Issey Miyake coats, and Yohji Yamamoto black culottes — which all have inspired the Olsen sisters' own refined and minimalist designs. Other highlights include a Pierre Cardin tuck cape, John Galliano kimono dress and a Comme des Garçons skirt with a pin fastening.

Good news for fans of fashion's favourite duo, it's likely not the last sale of its kind. In an interview with Coveteur, the sisters said that they have been buying for more than 20 years from "vintage shops, dealers and flea markets across New York, Los Angeles and Paris"..

The collection comes at a time where there is increasing interest in pre-loved clothes; many designers now upcycling clothes from the old collections. Some brands, like Miu Miu for instance, produce limited edition vintage capsules. And, according to the latest The Real Real report, in 2020 the value of vintage pieces increased by 67%. Which brands come on top? Louis Vuitton, Old Céline, Christian Dior, Cartier and Gucci.
