Dare to Air: Nike's Air Max 720 sneakers are inspiring us to take a leap of faith

Take off

In the tarot deck, The Fool is usually depicted walking off a cliff. Things never being quite as they appear in the mystical arts, The Fool far from represents folly; he, as a matter of fact, embodies faith, and the spirit of spontaneity. Draw this baby during a reading, and odds are, new beginnings are in the works for you.

Whether you were jumping off a literal or figurative cliff, you’d probably want to be wearing Nike’s Air Max 720s; unprecedentedly bouncy and supremely comfortable, these kicks — which boast Nike's tallest ever (38mm, in case you were wondering), partially recycled air unit for maximum spring — will more than guarantee their wearers’ leaps take them far. In conjunction with Nike Air Max Day, we asked four adventurous individuals from the worlds of performance, design and technology to give them a bungee-jumping test run, daring them to challenge their limits and set new personal records. Below, their thoughts on taking chances and how fear encourages living in the moment.

CHERYL ALLISON | CONTENT CREATOR AND GAMER

What's essential to your soul, the way air is to your body?
Cheryl Allison (CA):
Being around cats! Their carefree personality relaxes me.

Complete this sentence: If I were as light as air...
CA:
I would peacefully spend all my time in the clouds, looking down onto the bustling world. Feeling free is so important to me.

When was the last time you took a leap of faith?
CA:
Literally? Bungee jumping with Nike.

Are you afraid of heights? What are you most afraid of?
CA:
I'm not afraid of heights, but I'm afraid of thunder.

Those afraid of falling will never fly. True or false?
CA:
It's true, those afraid of falling will never leave the ground. Had I not pursued my passion for Esports, I'd still be working at my miserable, fixed-hour job. Don't be afraid of taking the leap, because one day you'll look back and see that it was all worth it.

Do you think you've 'taken off' in life?
CA:
I would say I have. I'm living independently, pursuing my dream career, and I'm in a stable relationship. I've never been happier.

ALIF AIRCHO | DANCER AND CHOREOGRAPHER

What's essential to your soul, the way air is to your body?
Alif Aircho (AA):
Dance and music are definitely my essentials.

Complete this sentence: If I were as light as air...
AA:
I would fly across the globe 24/7, and see the world from a bird's eye view.

When was the last time you took a leap of faith?
AA:
Trusting my gut about wanting to turn dance into a career. It's not a common vocation in Singapore; working freelance also means that your monthly income is never fixed. But with constant faith and hard work, things eventually go the way you want them to.

Are you afraid of heights? What are you most afraid of?
AA:
Not really. I'm afraid of losing my family and my dance career, which I've worked so hard for.

Those afraid of falling will never fly. True or false?
AA:
True! Everybody needs to accept and learn from mistakes, failure and defeat, to then soar higher than they ever did.

Do you think you've "taken off" in life?
AA:
I don't think I've taken off fully in life. There are still so many things I want to do with my career and my new family. There's no limit to success, unless you limit yourself to it. I'm still taking off.

TANIKA ANDERSON | PRESENTER, MODEL, SINGER AND DANCER

What's essential to your soul, the way air is to your body?
Tanika Anderson (TA):
Friendship. Life means so much more when there are people around you to share with.

Complete this sentence: If I were as light as air...
TA:
I would travel with the wind and see the entire world from the sky.

When was the last time you took a leap of faith?
TA:
When I literally leapt 155 feet off the edge of a tower, for a collab with Buro. Singapore and Nike. *Wink*. It was the most incredible view of Singapore I've ever seen.

Are you afraid of heights? What are you most afraid of?
TA:
I've never been afraid of heights. I always get a rush of adrenaline being way up high; something about it is so empowering. I'm afraid of losing sight of my purpose. Purpose is what keeps me going, it's the driving force behind everything I do, every choice that I make. It's the legacy I want to leave on this Earth.

Those afraid of falling will never fly. True or false?
TA:
True, because if you never fall, you never grow or get the chance to learn from your mistakes. What's that old saying? "If you do what is easy, your life will be hard. If you do what is hard, your life will be easy."

Do you think you've "taken off" in life?
TA:
I believe I 'take off' almost every day in life. Each day, I do something that scares me, and every day I become a stronger, better version of myself. We can't control what happens to us, but we can control what we choose to take from the situation. So I take every opportunity as a chance to fly.

HANYA SEAH | JEWELLERY AND ACCESSORIES DESIGNER

What's essential to your soul, the way air is essential to your body?
Hanya Seah (HS):
My therapeutic pets — a dog, cat and two bunnies.

Complete this sentence: If I were as light as air...
HS:
I would eat all the food, as I wouldn't want to be underweight, ya know?

When was the last time you took a leap of faith?
HS:
Just this year, when I left my full-time job to focus on my personal ventures.

Are you afraid of heights? What are you most afraid of?
HS:
I would love to think not, but I might very well be. I had no second thoughts about jumping off the edge, but I felt like screaming the moment I lifted off and felt nothing but air beneath me. I'm most afraid of... crying babies.

Those afraid of falling will never fly. True or false?
HS:
I'd say that's 90% true. If you're afraid of failing or taking a fall, you'll never take risks that might turn out successful.

Do you think you've "taken off" in life?
HS:
Yes. Through pursuing my passion for sneakers and jewellery, I've had many opportunities open up to me. But I'm definitely not at my peak yet; may the ceiling get ever higher!
