Pigging out: How Tod's, Furla, Cos and more are putting their spin on (porcine) Chinese New Year

Until recently, fashion houses rapaciously cashed in on the Chinese or Lunar New Year, whose superstitions and animal themes provided fantastic merchandising opportunities. One imagines that the CNY capsules of old saw brands haw-hawing their way to the bank looking like the Laughing Buddha. With growing backlash against cultural appropriation and borderline-insulting opinions of Chinese consumers, however, companies now find themselves walking on eggshells (which we feel is a good thing. What's to dislike about vigilance against casual racism?).
We observe that many have gone the super-subtle route, issuing mandatorily red but otherwise gimmick-less accessories that wouldn't look out-of-place in a mainline collection. Others, meanwhile, have taken a faux-naif turn, banking on the reliable 'D'awww'-ness of cuddly creatures. Whatever the direction of 2019's Year of the Pig collections, we can at least agree on one thing: the relief of being spared a deluge of gaudy Chinaboo clobber.
