Chanel's all-new 31 bag is the modern multi-hyphenate of accessories
The world today celebrates the multi-talented. It's not hard to see why. In a constant bid to better ourselves, those at the top of their games (plural here is intentional) serve as ultimate inspiration. Along the vein of the manmade mimicking humankind, it then seems befitting we term Chanel's new bag on the block a multi-hyphenate of fashion accessories.
First seen on the fall/winter 2018 runway and styled two ways — as a tote in some looks (above) and folded over as a clutch in others (below) — that hinted at the bag's shape-shifting qualities, the 31's impending retail launch then revealed a third. Tucked within its quilted calfskin or tweed body and curved top handles are additional duo-coloured straps, allowing for it to sit casually on the shoulder to boot.
To the tune of Chanel DNA, its inaugural range of colourways take on the house's iconic two-tone legacy, with the bag's numerical name at once a nod to Coco's apartment and the boutique on 31 Rue Cambon, plus a witty reference to the French phrase, "se mettre sur son 31" — a saying that echoes that of "dressed to the nines" in English.
