And the award for classiest It bag of 2019 goes to... Bottega Veneta's The Pouch
Grab 'n' go
Bottega Veneta's commitment to understated, but definitely moneyed-to-the-hilt luxury hasn't wavered in its 53-year history, evidenced by the brand's long-time credo: "when your own initials are enough". In addition to its signature intrecciato — 'woven' in Italian — leather technique, BV's second most recognisable trademark was a soft, unstructured clutch. Chicly minimal, almost plainly so, it became known as the Lauren after Lauren Hutton carried one as a lovestruck congressman's wife in American Gigolo.
Freshly-minted creative director Daniel Lee has reinterpreted the Lauren for 2019, in much the same way as he revamped the house's intrecciato weave by exploding it in scale. The new Lauren, known simply as the Pouch, is practically the platonic ideal of a leather clutch; it retains the almost-anonymous sophistication of the original, despite excitingly eye-popping new colourways, fabrications, and a trendy miniature option. Influencers including Jiyoung Kim and Pernille Teisbaek have already been seen with theirs in tow during fashion month, so next season, expect a glut of imitators to follow.
