It’s official. We have at last reached a point beyond denial or ignorance. According to the recent report from the United Nations, it’s a “code red for humanity”. Our climate is getting so hot that temperatures are set to soar past a level of warming in about a decade. So yes, the long and bright future is not written — just yet.

So between our everyday habits of takeouts and online shopping, how can we as individuals do better? We know how, but we probably need to hear it again. Here are some eco-friendly ways that we can all follow to lessen our carbon footprint on our own.

Invest in reusable containers
This is the perfect time to cultivate some good habits. Let’s make taking reusable containers everywhere we go a thing. Just pass the container to your favourite hawkers at your neighbourhood food centre, they would appreciate the little gesture. Convenient and you’re already using less plastic.

Cook up a storm
Once or twice a week, try your hand at cooking in your own kitchen. There are tons of recipes floating on the Internet, YouTube, and TikTok (there are hundreds of viral food trends) that you could follow or gain some inspiration that will help fill your tummies. Besides, cooking helps to reduce energy usage in the food industry, it is healthier and cost-efficient. Our tip is to follow some eco-conscious foodies on Instagram for the best advice.

Meal Prep
Speaking of cost-efficiency, buy ingredients in bulk so that they can last a whole week. This is the perfect opportunity to hit up our wet markets and support their businesses in this tough window as well. Bring jars, cloth bags, or containers to carry the loose ingredients home instead of asking for a bag. If wet markets aren’t accessible near your home, many supermarkets across the country have started to practice zero-waste grocery shopping as well.

Reuse and recycle
Yes, perhaps this is a little extra but hear us out. We will never be truly able to live 100% zero waste. However, we can try our best to make sure that whatever we toss away has the potential to be repurposed. Have an empty plastic water bottle? Use it as a watering can for your plants. Have an old toothbrush? Make it your newest cleaning tool to get into the tough corners of your bathroom.

Better yet, get separate bins for metals, paper, and plastics just for recycling. Oftentimes, what is thrown into our recycling bins end up being incinerated instead because they are contaminated with other types of rubbish.

Turn off the lights
We live in Singapore, where the sun is bright and relentless. Perfect for working at home because you won’t need to have the lights turned on all day long (unlike the office). Also, don’t take our switches for granted by leaving them on for the whole day. Let’s remember to turn them off after using them, it won’t take more than two seconds.
