Things to do this weekend: Singapore Chinese Film Festival, The Library of Unread Books, and more
Fully booked weekend
It's been quite a while since Phase 2 was introduced — and so, more and more of our favourite eateries, bars, and attractions have opened up their doors to customers. With that being said, bigger events still remain on hold. Not to fret though. This week, travel the globe virtually, catch a Chinese film, or read a used book that has never been cracked open before.
EXPLORE | #WorldOnScreen
Travelling the world for a holiday seems like an improbable option for the foreseeable future, but you can still (virtually) explore different parts of the globe with Sistic's new festival programme: #WorldOnScreen. Satisfy your wanderlust with an array of live interactive tours and educational online experiences hosted by professional guides worldwide. Discover the magic of Girona, where Game of Thrones was filmed; experience Fushimi Inari, Japan's most popular shrine complex; or explore the streets of Liverpool's Cavern Quarter and learn about the history of The Beatles with this virtual event.
The Beatles Early Years Tour and the Game of Thrones in Girona tour will happen on 2 and 3 October respectively. To check out the full line-up of tours, click here.
WATCH | Singapore Chinese Film Festival
The annual Singapore Chinese Film Festival is back with their eighth rendition. This year, in line with pandemic measures, the Festival is offering both virtual and in-cinema screenings for the first time. Catch more than 25 films ranging from award-winning independent feature films to Amoy-dialect classics. Plus, the Festival is holding an online Q&A session this year, where you'll be able to meet the filmmakers virtually.
From 2 October to 11 October. Click here to grab your tickets.
READ | The Library of Unread Books
In its eighth iteration, The Library of Unread Books is a living reference library with over 2,000 titles shelved in its collection. An itinerant project started by Heman Chong and Renée Staal, the library consists of unread books donated by individuals, emphasising on the notions of access, excess and politics of redistribution. Grab an unread book at the Library's installation at I_S_L_A_N_D_S for its eight run.
From 2 October to 25 October. The library will be open for browsing every weekend, Friday to Sunday, from 12-7pm. For more information about I_S_L_A_N_D_S, click here.
LITERATURE | Singapore Literature Festival in NYC
You don't have to be in the Big Apple for the 4th Biennial Singapore Literature Festival in NYC this year. Hosted by Singapore Unbound, the independent festival aims to bring together both Singaporean and American writers and literature experts with a slew of dialogues and programmes. This year, the theme has been labelled 'The Politics of Hope', and all events will be free and held on Zoom.
From 1 October to 3 October. Click through to learn more about the festival.
THEATRE | Rice Ball 2020: Maskquerade
Head to a virtual ball and support the local theatre scene with the 19th annual Wild Rice charity gala: the Wild Rice Ball. The theatre scene has been badly affected by the pandemic, and thus the virtual ball this year will serve as Wild Rice's most critical fundraiser yet. Enjoy a gourmet meal at home, mingle with friends in a private virtual room, and dress to impress with the Ball's 'Put Your Best Face(Mask) Forward' programme.
Happening on 3 October. To learn more about the event, click here.
