Google’s Year in Search 2016 reveals what Singaporeans really cared about this year: Sports, politics and a particular Korean drama

Was your struggle particularly real in 2016? In a year that's seen triumphs and tribulations across the world of politics, entertainment, sports and pop culture, what did you find yourself Googling the most? The early months saw the passing of David Bowie and Prince and the comeback of Ryan Reynolds in a superhero movie that didn't bomb. Things seemed to take a turn for the worse in the middle of 2016, when Brexit happened and Donald Trump launched his presidential campaign. Football fans stayed up late for Euro 2016, with Portugal supporters celebrating their win. Back home, we welcomed the arrival of Pokémon Go and Joseph Schooling's Olympic win in August. From finding out where his favourite carrot cake stall was to trailing his victory parade, websites scrambled for a slice of Schooling's clicks. Unfortunately, 2016 saw the passing of the late president S.R. Nathan as well.

Tom Hiddleston's the only Hollywood name under Singapore's list of trending people, which we only have Taylor Swift to thank. The iPhone 7 made a splash with its introduction of headphone jacks — love it or hate it, people were quick to find out if it's a groundbreaking improvement. The Korean wave didn't stop this year too, with new television series Descendants of the Sun making heartthrobs of actor Song Joong Ki and actress Song Hye Kyo.
