This is how you can support underground Asian creatives
Walk the talk
After almost three months of moving into our new office space here in Jalan Besar, we think this cosy neighbourhood is starting to grow on us. What we love most? How we can find a range of local food to satisfy our cravings, whether it's the mouth-watering and affordable popiah that's just a five-minute walk away, or our ultimate guilty pleasure that's Swee Choon Tim Sum located across the road. But who knew this industrial building-clad area also had a thriving creative scene?
We're not talking about spots to take your 'gram worthy shots, but actual art works and architecture from designers within the region. If you're not convinced, head down to furniture brand-producer Industry+'s event, '1km'. Together with curator Design Pier, this four-day event aims to highlight the creatives that have set up space in the neighbourhood. Take a walk down the kilometre spanning between Jalan Besar and Lavender Street, where participating brands including Mud Rock Ceramics, industrial-based designer Tiffany Loy, and beer house The 1925 Brewery boast their trade through satellite events. But before you embark, pop by Industry+'s showroom at Tyrwhitt Road to view an exhibition showcasing the works of 15 Asian contemporary artists.
If you've always wondered how to support creatives both locally and within the region, this is where you start. We'll definitely be popping by during one of our lunch breaks.
1km will be held from 5 to 8 October. Open to public.
