International Women's Day 2019: Rita Ora leads Apple's 'Made by Women' hands-on sessions at its Orchard flagship

The future is female

Text: Aravin Sandran

British singer-songwriter Rita Ora is slated to headline Today at Apple's 'Made by Women' series in support of International Women's Day. Scheduled to take place at Apple's spacious Orchard flagship on 18 March, the currently fully-booked performance will see the fashionable performer belt out some of her latest singles  maybe even the sexually charged "Girls" — from her 2018 album, Phoenix. She will also be available for a Q&A session after, where fans can possibly get some insights into her songwriting process and how she manages to reinvent her style on every red carpet appearance.

Besides the pop sensation, the series spotlights several high-achieving Asian women from the fields of art, design, music, tech and fitness. Through intimate hands-on sessions, they will reveal their inspiring success stories and dish out more than a few handy tips on how you can use your trusty Apple device to realise your potential. Six of those workshops are currently live and free to book. The others will be available for registration later this month and will feature singer-songwriter Inch Chua, founder of Fitsphere Liv Lo and poet Pooja Nansi. We've picked out three that'll tickle your creative muscle below.

Art Lab: Translating Emotions into Art with Marina A
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Saturday, 9 March

Singapore-based artist Marina A is best known for illustrating album artworks for local bands including Disco Hue and FFion. Self-described as "cosmic surrealism", her aesthetic blends vivid colour with serpentine symbolism and astrophysics. In this workshop, she'll share how to create one of her neon self-portraits using the iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and the Procreate app.

Photo Lab: Capturing Natural Beauty with Kelly Fan
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Saturday, 16 March

Singaporean photographer Kelly Fan captures some of the most arresting portraits locally. Instead of highly processed images that emphasize the digital hand of the photographer, she lets her subject take focus through their natural beauty. She will shed some light on this intimate connection while serving up tips to shoot with natural light. You'll take portraits after with an iPhone, then edit and enhance your shots with Adobe Lightroom CC.

Design Lab: Breaking Fashion Boundaries with Elyn Wong
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Sunday, 17 March

Known for its beautifully draped dresses that have been worn by members of the Crazy Rich Asians cast, womenswear label Stolen is directed by its founder, Singaporean Elyn Wong. Her astute eye for detail and abstraction was honed while working as an advertising executive for many years. She will talk about how art and fashion blend together in her work before helping you to create your own brand identity and vision board. You'll use the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil and the Procreate app to bring your ideas to life.
