Stopgap perform their song, Bender, and revisit the 90’s with their cover of Haddaway’s ‘What is Love’

Buro Backseat

Text: Tracy Phillips

Members of local indie rock outfit, Stopgap, get cosy in the backseat — sharing their source of strength, what makes them nervous, and who gets all the ladies

Stopgap was formed in 2011, but its raucous five members have known each other since their school days. Lead singer Adin Kindermann, guitarist Yew Jin Lee, and drummer Eldad Leong all bonded at ACS Barker playing in the chapel band, while guitarist Calvin Phua and bassist Grayson Seah joined the fold when they ended up in the same course as Kindermann — Film, Sound and Video at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

Their camaraderie is infectious, which is clear if you've ever caught them live on stage, and evident again in how they write their songs — there's no designated songwriter as they all chip in on every track to the crazy ease with which Kindermann and Phua mimicry in unison to the most random songs as we drive around for Buro Backseat.

Between all the dad jokes, Euro trash throwbacks, and regales of drunken band stories — that includes drinking water from the pond outside The Arts Science Museum — we managed to find out what makes them nervous, and just who is the band's biggest clown amongst clowns.
