Soulful Ghosts, a music duo made up of Vanessa Fernandez and Nic Robertson, has dropped a new single "Release"
Singapore singer-songwriter Vanessa Fernandez has released a new track with Australian guitarist-producer Nic Robertson as part of their electronic-soul duo called Soulful Ghosts. Titled "Release", the down tempo track features Vanessa's chilled yet expressive vocals over Nic's minimalist beats and synths. The single is follow-up to their well-received 2018 debut, a three-track self-titled EP.
"'Release' is a culmination of several years of spiritual exploration on a journey by Nic and me," Vanessa, also known as Vandetta, explains.
They started writing the song in October 2019. The two had been travelling on sabbatical for several months and were inspired to make music again.
"We worked on it in Nazaré, a seaside town in Portugal where some of the biggest surf in the world is found, and then finished it in Okinawa where we stayed after," she says.
"We recorded vocals back in Singapore in November last year and Nic finished mixing it in January 2020."
Vanessa hopes that audiences could discover a more spiritual and mystical side of her through the song. She has shown her vocal versatility over the years from soul to alternative R&B and hip hop. This track shows a maturity and growth to Vandetta.
"It's something Nic and I share in common, and I feel very lucky to be able to go through this and express ourselves together. Not many people have such a blessing."
Soulful Ghosts united in their love for D'Angelo, Pharrell and Max Martin. Time spent apart and together has infused their music with a sense of longing. "Release" is a revelation with wound-up feelings slowly unleashed over slippery beats.
