'Reload': Watch M.I.A.'s lo-fi music video for the unreleased track from 2004
Bring the noise
It has been a whirlwind year for Maya Arulpragasam. Better known by her stage name M.I.A., the controversially outspoken Sri Lankan-born, English-raised rapper's documentary MATANGI/MAYA/M.I.A., which chronicled her rise to fame through intimate home videos, was awarded Sundance's World Cinema Documentary Special Jury award earlier this year. When the documentary saw its theatrical release in September, her fans got to relive some of her most talked-about career moments including when she defiantly raised a middle finger in the middle of her cameo during Madonna's 2012 Superbowl halftime performance.
Following its on-demand release via iTunes and other digital platforms in December, M.I.A. revealed another layer to the documentary by sharing a lo-fi music video for a previously unreleased track featured in its soundtrack, 'Reload'. The song was recorded in 2004 before the launch of her debut album Arular in 2005 and was co-written by Elastica's Justine Frischmann, a close collaborator and her fellow flatmate in the early 2000s. The video was shot in the same year as well, within the red walls of Frischmann's basement with three black women dressed in her signature street-ready sportswear.
