Photographer Yik Keat documents pop star Lauv while on tour in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Manila
Up close and personal
How did this opportunity with Ari aka Lauv come about?
His management contacted me via email about half a year ago. I was really shocked, but I was super stoked at the same time.
How did you feel about his music before this?
I have listened to his music regularly, so the opportunity to meet him and understand his songs in detail as well as observing how he works when he is touring makes me appreciate his music on a higher level.
Have your feelings towards his music changed after this experience?
He injects a lot of how he feels about life into his lyrics and music in general. After getting to know him, it felt more emotional to listen to his music.
What were your most memorable locations or photographs during this experience?
Venue wise, it has got to be in Manila. It was his biggest show to date. It was only two years ago that he opened for Ed Sheeran. On the road, it's got to be the roof in Hong Kong when we had about 20 minutes to take a breather. The schedule was always tight so having some space to walk around felt good. The view was amazing as well.
You are known for your architecture and travel photography. Has this experience encouraged you to explore music photography further?
I have been shooting music for quite some time now, usually for DJs. This my first time shooting such a huge pop star. I have always wanted to shoot more music and document artists during their everday life. Personally, I think that it's an interesting perspective to show audiences.
Which musician or performer would you like to follow and photograph next?
I would really love to document Coldplay. They are one of my inspirations. I would also love to be on tour with power players within the dance music scene such as Martin Garrix and Swedish House Mafia.
