Papa Zura: Buro 24/7 Singapore Playlist #151
I’m infusing the best of Poland for the official Opening Party of Poland Shiok!. It’s a month-long festival that brings about Polish arts, dining, culture, film and happy hours to the sunny shores of Singapore. This playlist contains the eclectic result of what inspires me - my classics, tracks that I have played at my parties and a few Polish pieces, which includes sounds from the ‘60s and ‘70s from my vinyl collection.
'Ajoka' by Alex Band is a danceable funky single recorded by a Polish big band act popular during the ‘70s. The groove is absolutely worth showing. Skalpel is my favourite Polish group who created sampled music from Polish Jazz recordings. Listen to ‘1958’ from their first EP published by Ninja Tune. 'Free Witch & No Bra Queen' was recorded by a young Polish jazz and electronic band, EABS, in conjunction with Michal Urbaniak (Urbanator) and is dedicated to another jazz legend Krzysztof Komeda, who wrote the scores for Roman Polanski's films.
The last Polish accent isn't from Poland, but it inspired a rap hit by DJ Format & Chali 2na of Jurassic 5, 'We know Something You Don't'. Who knew that the beat was made on samples taken from an old Polish song of a band called Breakout! Finally, one of my favourite soulful evergreens by Billy Hawks, 'Oh Baby, I Believe I'm Losin' You.' This record is pure old school and has not left my DJ case in years!
