Buro 24/7 Singapore Weekly Playlist #55: Derrick Foo from Palm Ave Float Club
Set adrift on memory bliss
Founder of Palm Ave Float Club and former turntablist Derrick Foo shares the music to float away to
I started Palm Ave Float Club (PAFC) in late 2013. One floatation tank, one spare room at home and one confused but supportive mom. Since then, it's connected me to a community of like-minded doers, thinkers and innovators. The float club is now a place where people escape the grind and leave with renewed clarity.
I spent most of my teenage years learning the art of turntablism. It taught me how to flow with music while I scratched. These days, I listen to music that helps me get lost in the process, instead of fixating on the results. That's the theme of this playlist. Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts by Funkadelic reminds me of how our thoughts govern our actions. Good thoughts can liberate and bad thoughts can descend you to the lowest concept of yourself. Free your mind and all else will follow. The Texan band, Khruangbin plays hypnotic and soulful music that's heavily influenced by the sound of Southeast Asian funk. We love them so much that most of their tracks are in the PAFC playlist.
Mammal Hands by Kandaiki is a good quintuple track to remind us that life doesn't have to be 4/4 all the time. DJ Krush's Aoi Ame is a track that sounds like me washing my face in slow motion and Silhouettes (I, II & III) byFloating Points has so many layers of subtle movement, most of his tracks are usually 10 minutes long...great to work to or chat by the fire.
