Nathan Hartono takes centre stage in Singapore's NDP 2020 theme song, Everything I Am
With the general elections done and dusted, the National Day Parade organising committee has unveilied the theme song for this year's parade. Nathan Hartono — who burst onto the scene with his second place finish in Sing! China back in 2017 — has been chosen to show the nation some love this 2020.
Titled Everything I Am, the song is composed by songwriter Joshua Wan. It's an ode to the Singapore spirit of community and serves to motivate Singaporeans to express their appreciation for fellow citizens. The lyrics — simple and catchy — features Nathan's feathery vocals upon a backdrop of a string quartet and easy drum samples that tell a tale of surviving adversity together, all of which is packaged in a synth-pop song that makes for easy listening.
An accompanying music video directed by screenwriter, He Shuming, draws inspiration from Singaporeans who have shown kindness and understanding towards others in the midst of adversity. It includes the owners of OK Chicken Rice who donated 10,000 packets of chicken rice to healthcare workers during the pandemic; turns the spotlight on Redeafination, an independent hip-hop dance club for deaf individuals; and Come Makan With Me, an initiative started in 2018 by Dr Mohamad Farid, a volunteer with the labour movement’s Migrant Workers’ Centre, inviting migrant workers to have meals in their homes.
Even if you're not the most patriotic — and though it isn't as catchy as age-old favourites like Count On Me, Singapore or Tanya Chua's Where I Belong— it's hard to look away when the video features Hartono's beautifully chiseled face and serenading tenor. Listen to the song here.
