Matteblacc: Buro 24/7 Singapore Playlist #147
Late night boogie
When we were asked to play support to the late show for Sing Jazz, we were quite honoured as you can imagine. With headliners like Soul II Soul, Estelle and Lauryn Hill, we knew we had a huge responsibility to warm up a very big room. And though it seems obvious to theme our set with music that would compliment these R&B and soul icons, we decided to contrast that with more of a feel-good boogie funk vibe to get the party going.
'Feel Up' by Grace Jones is a great way to ease into what we want to do with the night. Jones really sets the mood with this one and you can tell from the start. Escort is one of our favourite contemporary disco/boogie bands and 'Cameleon Chameleon' is a cheeky dancefloor heater that will do just that, literally.
We think 'All This Love That I'm Givin'' by Gwen McCrae will never leave our crates. It just represents our love for music and how we try to give it our all every time we DJ. There's something about some afro-beat disco that resonates with everyone, and this remix by Bosq of T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo's, 'Hwe Towe Hun' adds the right amount of bounce and just makes us want to get up and boogie.
'Think (About it)' by Barbara Tucker is a cover of the Lyn Collins' original (which is a favourite of ours and is also sampled by Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock for 'It Takes Two')... and when we think about the iconic divas that are taking the stage this Sing Jazz, we just had to pay tribute to them with this throwback soul number.
Matteblacc are DJs Drem and JNR who will both be playing at Sing Jazz on 6 and 7 April respectively. You can also catch them regularly at Lulu's Lounge, Kilo Lounge and Potatohead or at their second home, café and record shop, Choice Cuts Goods + Coffee.
