1. He's a classically-trained musician.
The 21-year-old, who's an alumni of St. Andrew's Junior College is a classically-trained pianist with a Grade 8 certificate. As a producer, Manfred Lim (his real name) has been tinkering around for three years — initially, he was a fan of four-piece indie/rock bands.
2. He was discovered through SoundCloud.
Yes, these things do happen. After hearing a remix of Skrillex & Diplo's track To Ü which Myrne had uploaded on SoundCloud, creative director of Mad Decent Paul Devro emailed him to ask if he had more tracks.
3. Signing onto Mad Decent's a pretty big deal.
If you haven't heard of Mad Decent, it's a Los Angeles-based label headed by Wesley Pentz, otherwise known as Diplo. Among other accomplishments, the three-time Grammy-nominated producer and DJ was responsible for 2015's earworm, Lean On. Other artists under the label include Major Lazer, Baauer, Rusko, Dillon Francis and RiFF RAFF.
4. He's not just about indie electronica.
While the genre's what he's been branded with, his sound on the Mad Decent-released EP Softsins (released in October last year) also bears future bass, R&B and trap nuances. External female vocals include those from Mad Decent's Elkka and LIZ, as well as Singaporean JJ.
5. You can catch him live every week, too.
Besides catching him at Moonbeats Asia's warehouse party this Saturday, you can also see him spin every week at Vanity, the new(ish) club at South Beach.
Moonbeats Warehouse Party is happening on 16 April at Studio Point, 158 Kallang Way from 9pm to late. Get your tickets here.
