Gary Powell: Buro 24/7 Singapore Playlist #126

Hotter than hell

Text: Gary Powell

What does a soundtrack inspired by Haw Par Villa sound like? We ask Gary Powell of The Libertines

I'm Gary Powell. I do many things, I'm a busy boy and I play the drums for The Libertines, DJ, and have my own record label: 25 Hour Convenience Store. I will be starting my charity, Unity Rocks, again and hopefully working with a charity called Stop Hate UK, which promotes the lack of intolerance and brotherly-sisterly love. I'll be putting on a bunch of shows and working with cool people including Dave Rowntree from Blur in the New Year. The Libertines will be recording a new album soon in our studio which will be in our own hotel in Margate.

I've just went to the 10 Courts of Hell in Haw Par Villa and it was 'Friday the 13th', so my playlist is a diabolical mix of madness. Individually there's nothing sinister about these songs but when you put them together, you get an unnerving and strange mix.

'Redbone' by Childish Gambino harks back to a time in Detroit, the '60s, Parliament-Funkadelic and also Carl from The Libertines would spend a lot of time calling me Danny Glover — Childish Gambino is actually Danny Glover's son. 'Rebel Rebel' by David Bowie appeals to by my rebel soul and Bowie is just a god. If I ever was to be a real DJ, I would want to be DJ Shadow. The Maccabees are possibly the best modern band that came out of Britain in the past 10 years. One of my favourite bands in the '90s was Fishbone, and I got to watch them in Saratoga Springs. They were absolutely amazing, even after all this time. There's much energy.

Gary Powell DJ-ed at the Fred Perry Subculture Live party on 13 October.
