More than a week after Prince's passing, ardent fan and musician Dru Chen has graced us with a fitting tribute: A rendition of the late icon's Adore, a track off his 1987 double album, Sign "O" the Times

When we wanted to reach out to musicians in Singapore for quotes on Prince's passing on 21 April, there was no doubt in our minds that the first person to get in touch with was Dru Chen. The 26-year-old is all soul, counting the likes of Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson as his favourites growing up. Then of course, there's Prince — gone too soon at the age of 57, months after he released his 39th studio album, HITnRUN Phase Two.

After Chen's debut EP Intentions in 2013, he's ventured into slow jam category with
You Got It Babe last year, showing off his musical chops by bringing a pop accessibility to a soul core. The ability to hit those high notes, his affable stage presence and that sense of rhythm that never misses a beat — Prince has undoubtedly inhabited Chen's artistry. Sharing that the late icon helped him find his voice as a musician, Chen recently uploaded a keyboard-led cover of Adore, mentioning: "Thank U Prince. For all time, we're with you."

Can't get enough? Chen will be performing on 7 May at Getai Soul 2016, a festival celebrating soul music, food and art at Pearl Hill's City Park. While nothing compares 2 Prince, you can still find his soul in artistes who strive in bringing his gift to the next generation.
