See Zachary Cole Smith of DIIV cover Elliot Smith, Nirvana and Cat Power
Ahead of DIIV's gig in Singapore, check out frontman Zachary Cole Smith stretch his pipes in these five covers
Talented, yet troubled: Zachary Cole Smith might have passed Club 27, but at 32 years of age, the New Yorker has faced his fair share of inner demons. After getting arrested for possession of hard drugs with former girlfriend and fellow musician Sky Ferreira in 2013, Smith struggled before checking himself into rehab earlier this year. Even though he was facing difficult issues, the vocalist and guitarist still managed to get sh*t done. He modeled for Saint Laurent in a fall 2013 campaign and walked the spring 2014 and 2016 menswear show. He directed Ferreira's music video for 'Omanko' in December 2014, and with his four-piece band DIIV, released their second album, Is This The Are, in 2016.
DIIV isn't Smith's first flush with music and touring. Prior to DIIV (named after the Nirvana song, 'Dive'), he played drums in Beach Fossils, and then guitar for Darwin Deez. While DIIV's signature sound delves into synth-pop and shoegaze category, Smith definitely enjoys dipping his toes into various outlets, as seen in his range of covers. His choices of Kurt Cobain, Elliott Smith and Cat Power aren't surprising — if you seek a trio to sing your troubles away, these musicians are your go-to fast fixes.
1. Elliot Smith, 'Ballad of Big Nothing'
2. Alex G, 'Icehead'
3. Cat Power, 'Nude as the News'
4. Sparklehorse, 'Cow'
5. Nirvana, 'Bambi Slaughter'
DIIV will perform in Singapore on 10 September, 7.30pm at The Pavilion at Far East Square. Book tickets. Check out last week's #ManCrushMonday.
