Local singer-songwriter DANI has just released a music video for ‘blue’
Singaporean singer-songwriter DANI, whose real name is Danielle Scheidl Koh, is another artist to add to the growing list of promising new local acts to look out for. Her debut indie pop single, 'blue', may have only been released in March this year, but it immediately marked its 12th and fifth spot respectively on Spotify Singapore's Viral 50 and the iTunes Singapore Charts. Moving to London at age 19 to pursue her music career, she created the track with Grammy-nominated producer Bryan Wilson, who's known for working with big names like Florence + The Machine, Arctic Monkeys and Of Monsters And Men.
"'blue' was written about struggling with emotionally crippling moments and the world that surrounded it, and realising that the start of making positive impacts in our lives and in our worlds is when we can change the way we hold, feel and look at ourselves, to be gentler and to learn to love our edges, rather than merely making superficial changes and reactions to our sense of selves..." said DANI in a Facebook post. "So when we start to grow rather than allow our circumstances to change who we are, to love and to be gentler with ourselves, we also do so with others and our relationship with everything changes."
Her soft, ethereal voice inspired by the likes of M83 and Sigur Rós perfectly fits the emotional theme of the haunting music video. It's directed by local up-and-coming filmmaker Clare Chong, who's no stranger to music videos — she's recently behind Lincoln Lim's 'Lift Your Eyes'. Filmed at the iconic Blue Lagoon in Iceland, DANI explores the picturesque Nordic atmosphere with occasional scenes of nature superimposed on it, leaving us in a hazy daze.
