Club quarantine: Local DJ live streams from Zouk Digital, Sunshine Nation, Darker Than Wax and more
Bust a move
Ever since the quarantine started and nightlife entertainers lost their work, the internet has been a plethora of choice for music lovers. DJs got online to show off their skills and entertain their followers, some doing it live, much to clubbers' relief. A dance party at home! By ourselves!
We have had the likes of DJ D-Nice and Questlove from The Roots doing live sets from their homes to our homes on Instagram Live and YouTube almost daily and for a few hours since day one (or at least US's version of that). Twitch has too many channels to choose from for bedroom DJs to those throwing virtual music festivals from all round the world. But if you're missing the local nightlife scene, here are a few of our homegrown talents and clubs helping us party like it's 1999.
To celebrate their first year anniversary, MARQUEE Singapore is holding a free virtual event with headliners Nicky Romero, Steve Aoki, and Andrew Rayel on May 22. Revelers can tune in on Zoom or Twitch, and will have a chance to win prizes AND be featured on the livestream. This is only the beginning, because this event will kick off a series of virtual clubbing experiences in May and June, headlined by the likes of Dash Berlin, MarLo, Dannic, Blasterjaxx, and Paul Van Dyk. Follow MARQUEE Singapore on Instagram for updates.
Singapore's legendary club is giving us the Zouk experience online with DJ sets and lifestyle content like fitness workouts and cocktail tutorials along with their global family in Malaysia (@zoukgenting) and Las Vegas. This week sees a daily line-up of resident DJs blowing up Zouk's YouTube and Facebook pages with live sets pre-recorded from the dancefloors of the club as well as featuring signature nights at Zouk.
Sunshine Nation Home Sessions
You know them as the organisers behind the annual Garden Beats. Now that we all have to stay home, Sunshine Nation is putting on Home Sessions — ranging from live DJ sets to cooking tutorials — to bring some entertainment right to your doorstep. Check their social media for deets, and if you're looking for more virtual events to join, the group is also curating a list of events by other organisers (think DIY face scrub workshops, guided meditation sessions, and mindfulness workshops) and putting the spotlight on them with the hashtag #ShineAtHome.
A Phat Cat Collective
Local nightlife group and consultancy A Phat Cat Collective, which runs Nineteen80 and Pinball Wizard, are lining up a weekly roster of livestreams across the month of May. Streaming live on Twitch, both clubs will feature their resident DJs — DJ Bobos on Fridays and DJ Ollie'Des on Saturdays — in their own homes playing a megamix of pop and hip hop from the '80s to the '00s. The livestreams are free, of course, but you can show your support by purchasing a pay-it-forward cash voucher via Nineteen80's temporary online store that can be used when the club reopens.
Darker Than Wax
This local underground electronic music label has a month-long line-up of radio shows and pre-recorded mixes. Its slew of DJs, including Funk Bast*rd and Rah, are heating up The Lot Radio and Radio Raheem, independent online radio stations streaming from New York and Milan respectively, as well as live streams on MixCloud.
DJs doing their thang
You will have to be following the DJs to find out when they are on because sometimes it is a spontaneous set. Here are a few to note.
Revision Music's (@revisionmusicsg) DJs Rah and Nez Senja have been doing their own "work from home" music sets that stream live on Twitch as well as raising money for the Vulnerable Women's Fund, women affected by COVID-19 in Singapore, on their Facebook page. Sennheiser has featured local DJs on their Instagram Live, previously Ce La Vi's head DJ Deepak (@dee_prashad) and Magic Carpet's resident DJ Milan (@djmilansg), who have both done their own sets on Instagram Live too. In fact, DJ Milan is playing this Friday and Saturday night, while Deepak has released his own bedroom mixtape on Ce La Vi's Mixcloud page. DJ Zushan Benny (@zushan_benny) has also done a special drum & bass set fully on vinyl that is available for bopping to on YouTube.
