Chinese New Year 2019: Festive playlists for every mood, as curated by Li Ronghao, G.E.M. and more

Good times

Chinese New Year might be around the corner now, but unless you've been living under a rock (or shopping solely at Mustafa Centre), you've probably endured more than a month's worth of "Gongxi, Gongxi" on repeat at every heartland mall, NTUC Fairprice and convenience store. You're probably going to be hosting your very own parties next week, and instead of spinning these overheard traditional tunes and cause ear bleeds, hit up one of Apple Music's six guest-curated playlists for CNY and your guests might just stick around a little longer. In addition to a short film by renowned Chinese director Jia Zhangke shot entirely on an iPhone to celebrate the festive holiday, these six playlists on Apple Music were put together by 2018's most significant Chinese artistes such as G.E.M., Jam Hsiao, Karen Mok, LAY, Li Ronghao and Nicholas Tse. Each playlist personifies the artiste's growth over the past year and includes some of their personal favourites of all time. Chinese New Year 2019: Festive playlists for every mood, as curated by Li Ronghao, G.E.M. and more (фото 1)

For starters who are looking for a crowd-pleaser, look no further than pop megastar G.E.M.'s (aka "Get Everybody Moving") blockbuster playlist. There's something for everyone on it: from chart-topping pop anthems such as Taylor Swift's "New Year's Day" and Ariana Grande's "thank u, next" to Mandopop tunes from the likes of JJ Lin, Wang Leehom and Jay Chou thrown in for good measure, in addition to her own work. 2018 was a productive year for the over-achieving 27-year-old: she starred in Chinese rap talent show The Rap of China, blew audiences away with her "Queen of Hearts" world tour, wrote her Fairytale Trilogy EPs while on the road and then released it later in the year to rave reviews. Here's to day-dreaming (and day-drinking) that listening to one of her hits imbues all of us with the same ambition.
