All that jazz

Text: Kaye

In time for the Singapore Jazz Festival this weekend, Kaye from Darker Than Wax shares a playlist that shows the deep influence jazz has had on modern music

My playlist is specifically tailored to showcase how jazz has crept into diverse genres, from dance and soul to hip hop. The last few years have seen a very strong rise in such crossover acts that aren't defined by one genre, but who draw a bit of everything — now that to me is where the spirit of jazz lives strong. It's definitely more conceptual and visceral — rather than intellectual — when it comes to talking about jazz.

From the frenetic spiritual jazz of Kamasi Washington to the cheeky odd metered future jazz fusion of Dego & Kaidi's
Carrot & Sesame, the heavy motifs in Taylor Mcferrin's Already There (feat. Robert Glasper), and Glasper himself with that haunting rendition of the Nirvana classic Smells Like Teen Spirit. I've also included my personal all time favourite hip hop track from A Tribe Called Quest, Excursions. It's everything in jazz, and jazz in everything.

Kaye is the co-founder of Singaporean-based label, Darker Than Wax. They'll curate Sing Jazz 2016's entertainment lineup on 4 March. Tickets are available here.
