Best New Music of the Week: Nick Jonas, Narelle, Zara Larsson and more
Loud and clear
Just Shut Up by Narelle
Formerly a part of homegrown band, The Sam Willows, Narelle has since launched her solo career where she's been experimenting with a variety of genres. While her previous single Blue was a melancholic ballad, Just Shut Up is a far cry from that. As you would probably be able to infer from the title, it's a power anthem, the kind of tune you would play to hype yourself to kick a** for the day ahead. The songstress' sultry vocals paired with her own unique sense of artistry gives this track all the makings of a chart-topper.
Spaceman by Nick Jonas
This groovy beat pairs well with Jonas' mellow, calming voice; a cosmic rhyhmic track that guarantees Spaceman is going to eat up the charts. And the lyrics will prove relatable to many, as they are actually inspired by his anxiety and lonelinesss felt due to the pandemic changing the mode of interaction between him and his loved ones. See: "And I'm talking to you, but it never feels like it comes through, I'm on my own". If you're feeling disconnected from the world right now, we could all use listening to Spaceman to help us all feel a lil' more connected.
Look what you've done by Zara Larsson
We were fully expecting yet another bop from pop princess Zara Larsson. And while this one is a tad more sombre than her usual offerings, it still comes with an electrifying beat that will inspire you to boogey it out on the dancefloor. With lyrics like, "I ain't crying anymore, I'm stronger than I was before" and "Now that you're gone, I'm number one", it serves as an uplifting inspirational tune for those with broken hearts to rise up beyond the heartbreak, put themselves first and become even stronger than ever. And as much as the lyrics are a masterpiece, can we also talk about Zara Larsson's eargasm-worthy runs when she belts out the chorus?
Encore by GOT7
Fans were dismayed when GOT7 announced their departure from longtime management company, JYP, and feared their favourite band was disbanding for good. But their new surprise single Encore has — thankfully! — laid those rumours to rest. The sweet, tender loving ballad sounds like a reassurance to their fans that they will always be here to stay. We bet you won't be able to resist your tears as you listen to the genuine emotion in the talented members' voices, as well as the heartwarming lyrics like, "When everything was new to us, everything about you was a gift to us".
Blue by Madison Beer
If you thought Madison Beer could only do pop music, well, it might be time to alter that perception. The songstress goes out of her usual comfort zone to try out a completely new genre, with her new single channeling dark and gothic vibes while also showcasing the her impressive vocal chops. Given the rave reviews by fans on her new music style which resembles soulful indie rock, it's safe to say this gamble paid off for Madison and she seriously suits this style of music. And the lyrics are poetic yet chilling, "I was always blue behind the black mascara that I cry, you could be as sweet as honey but I knew the darkness in your mind". Literally a lyrical masterpiece.
