Best New Music of the Week: Justin Bieber and Benny Blanco, Lauv and Conan Gray, G-Eazy, and more
Loud and clear
Lonely by Justin Bieber and Benny Blanco
It's Lonely at the top — or, at least, that's the point Justin Bieber is trying to make in his new collaborative single with Benny Blanco. The melancholy track was written by Bieber, Blanco as well as Billie Eilish's brother and Grammy-winning producer, Finneas. Featuring a solemn piano melody, the vulnerable ballad reveals Bieber's struggle and reflections over the mounting criticism he faced at the peak of his career. This marks the second collaboration between Bieber and Blanco. The two previously worked together to produce the popular hit Love Yourself, from Bieber's 2015 Purpose album.
Fake by Lauv and Conan Gray
Lauv has joined forces with rising singer Conan Gray to release the anthem Fake. The snazzy new single with its guitar-driven melody marks Gray's first ever collaboration. On the joint single, Lauv shares, "we wrote Fake the first time I met Conan and it's one of my fav songs ever. I hope you love it." Gray added, "Lauv and I wrote Fake while we were just hanging and ranting about those two faced people everybody knows. Those people who say one thing and do the other, people who constantly talk trash about their own friends. We wanted to make something fun you can scream in the car to, a song to flip a bird at those types of people."
By Yourself by Ty Dolla $ign (feat. Jhené Aiko and Mustard)
Ty Dolla $ign has just dropped his latest track By Yourself, this one featuring featuring Jhené Aiko and Mustard. An upbeat track, By Yourself sees Ty's smooth vocals accompanied by the Jhené Aiko's signature sensual tone over Mustard's production. The new single is part of Ty's upcoming collaborative album, Featuring Ty Dolla $ign, which is slated to release next week on 23 October. "I decided to name my third studio album 'Featuring Ty Dolla $ign' because there is truly something for everybody on this album," Ty wrote in a social media post. "It features some of my most talented friends, on some of the best music I've made in my career."
Crazy by Kelly Rowland
Kelly Rowland is Crazy for her man in her uptempo new single. The electro-dance pop anthem sees the Destiny Child singer shedding her old R&B groove and instead belting out her love over a groovy, bass-heavy production. Crazy follows the singer's previous earlier release, Coffee, as well as an announcement of her second child with husband Tim Witherspoon. Fans are hoping that the release of two new singles will perhaps signal Rowland's new studio album, which is seven years in the making.
Hate The Way by G-Eazy (feat. blackbear)
Rapper G-Eazy has made his comeback with a reflective new single, Hate The Way. The rapper teamed up with fellow rapper blackbear for the brooding track. Through emotive verses, G-Eazy muses over a toxic relationship that he still longs over, with blackbear jumping in for the hook. The song is accompanied by a music video directed by Kat Webber, and features Lithuanian actress Bria Vinaite (The Florida Project, The OA). The track is also speculated to be on G-Eazy's forthcoming album, These Things Happen Too, which is rumoured to have a release date sometime this year.
