Think you know local singer-songwriter Annette Lee?
1. She travelled to Nashville to record her debut EP
Annette Lee spent two years working on her debut EP, All Our Achilles Heels. Lee flew to Nashville, Tennesse where she recorded with award-winning producers and brothers Ed and Scoot Cash. The 26-year-old Singaporean artiste received a $10,000 grant from the National Arts Council and paid for the remaining expenses with her savings.
2. She is not formally trained in singing
Lee has never attended a singing class and taught herself to play the guitar when she was 12-years-old. "Eventually I learned how to write songs and wrote my own stuff too. I never actually paid for a singing class - the only thing I was more properly trained in was art and film-making," she said in an interview.
3. Her day job at SGAG funds her music
She writes scripts, directs videos and plays the popular character Sue Ann at local humour site SGAG to fund her passion for music. "I got a day job so that I can spend on (my EP)," she said in an interview. "In that sense, this is not the money-making thing that's supposed to feed me right now too. But if it makes it any better, I really enjoy my job too," she adds.
4. Her illustration blog landed her a job
The Nanyang Technological University's School of Art Design and Media graduate runs a personal blog where she shares illustrations behind a comic person persona. Her drawings gained the attention of SGAG where she was scouted and then offered a job.
5. She practices singing in the lift
Her full-time work schedule leaves her with little time to hone her craft but Lee makes the best out of everything. "I could only practice singing at night, after I was back from work. But because I didn't want to disturb my family, I'd ride the lift up and down multiple times just to be able to sing without anyone complaining," she said in an interview.
Annette Lee performs at Baybeats 2018 on 17 August 2018.
