Buro 24/7 Singapore Weekly Playlist #83: Alternative Christmas

'Tis the season

Text: Tracy Phillips

Tracy Phillips puts together an alternative Christmas playlist that'll put you in a reflective spirit

I've always thought of Christmas as a wonderful and poignant time — one for meaningful reflection, loved ones and for saying thanks to the many lessons learned in the year. Since Spotify already offers plenty of Christmas playlists with the typical holiday favourites, I opted for an alternative list crowdsourced from friends and colleagues. It's epic and emotional with a good dose of heartstring-tugging chord progressions. Thanks to the people who helped with this, you know who you are!

With its pensive lyrics, Nico's voice and the fact that Christmas will fall on a Sunday this year, Sunday Morning by Velvet Underground is a perfect song to add in. Forbidden Colours by David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto is a valiant, timeless track worthy of the season. Since it was the theme song for the war movie, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, I think the holiday was in mind when they made it too. It's probably the chimes and high hats but Cirrus by Bonobo gives me that Christmas-y feeling and accompanying sense of hope — same goes for Four Tet's She Just Likes To Fight.

Sigur Ros comes from Iceland so I think they know a thing or two about withstanding the cold Christmas months. I ended things off with their epic number, Svefn-g-englar, which translates to "Sleeping Angel" in English — for when else do we feel closer to the angels than during Christmas? Happy Holidays everybody!
