Discover where local jeweller and ardent Singapore design advocate, Carolyn Kan, first met her husband and why Mustafa is her favourite shopping mall

You know you've met a Singaporean when... they talk about the next place to eat during a meal.

My fondest memory from the last five decades is... the first time I met my husband at Ellenborough Market [at Swissotel Merchant Court] over Ah Bo Ling.

I wish Singapore would bring back... roadside night markets and street hawkers.

As a Singaporean, I really love to complain about... eating too much just before I have another bite of something else.

Singaporeans should stop complaining about... what the government should do for them and be the change that they want to see.

The most underrated thing about Singapore is... that everything works.

Every time I return back to our island, I appreciate... that life here is easy.

The one local dish I would pay any amount for is... the Soto Ayam at Adam Road market.

In 10 years time, I would like to see Singapore... appreciate the importance of play and not taking things so seriously.

Singapore is uniquely... funny. Singaporeans have a quirkiness I that I love. And we do laugh at ourselves.

Carolyn Kan, Singapore, 2015

Favourite local TV show: Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars — a children's TV show in the 70's.

Favourite local brand: Osim, the foot massager rocks.

Favourite Singlish word... Alamak

Favourite shopping mall: Does Mustafa's count? I would describe the Mustafa's experience as shopping in the twilight zone. I always get lost and end up discovering things there that are beyond my imagination.

Favourite childhood snack: Haw flakes
