Artist Dawn Ng: Visual Questionnaire #9
It's hard to pin down Singaporean visual artist Dawn Ng's practice. She has developed an uncanny ability to produce work across a breadth of mediums and scales: from Walter, the colossal white inflatable rabbit that traversed Singapore's nooks and crannies in 2010 to her colour-washed text-based installation 'Perfect Stranger' at Chan + Hori Contemporary earlier this year.
In January and February 2019, she will moving into the uncharted waters of performance for the first time in collaboration with Telok Ayer Arts Club. The experiential piece titled '11' will see four exclusive showings where each night, 11 strangers will be welcomed into the multi-concept venue that will be specially darkened into a black box. After being lubricated with a stiff cocktail, they will sit in pairs across each other in confession-style booths and read from 11 scripts that have been penned by the artist. The text explores Dawn's preoccupation with nostalgia, emotion and time. The hope is that what might usually be casual banter between strangers over the bar counter, could possibly become a transformative moment of vulnerability, openess and introspection. Or as Dawn describes it: "Some may get lost, some may find themselves, some may fall in love and some may want their money back."
