With news of comic legend Stan Lee passing away, look back at his best and worst Marvel movie cameos — in video
Legendary writer, editor and publisher Stan Lee has died at the age of 95 at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, early on Monday morning. He was the mastermind behind the countless characters of the uber-successful Marvel Comics universe including Black Panther, Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Mighty Thor, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, Daredevil and Ant-Man. Add to that, the man had a funny bone, making cameos in almost each one of the Marvel movies, so what better way to appreciate the man and his stellar body of work than take a gander down memory lane and list his cameos from worst to best.
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) - Shrinking Car Owner
His punchline: "Well the sixties were fun, but now I'm paying for it."
Review: Lee jarringly interrupts a full-on, high-octane car chase sequence, which is never a good idea when we are on the edge of our seats.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018) — Bus Driver
His punchline: "What's the matter with you kids, you've never seen a spaceship before?"
Review: Once again, Lee interjects in a scene where things start looking dire for Peter Parker. His cavalier way of delivering lines has become his signature, so we aren't complaining too much.
Black Panther (2018) — Thirsty Gambler
His punchline: "You know what, I'll just take these, bring 'em over here, and hold on for safe-keeping."
Review: Lee plays the part of the shady old man at the corner of the Roulette table, someone many of us have seen creeping around the tables at MarinaBay Sands. Thirsty old ah pek indeed.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017) — Barber (uncredited)
His punchline: "Don't you move. My hands aren't as steady as they used to be."
Review: Lee was acutely aware of his age, and here, his self-deprecating line about his tremoring hands hits the spot on all levels.
Spiderman: Homecoming (2017) — Gary
His punchline: "Don't make me come down there, you punk."
Review: Comic fans get especially giggly when Lee makes cameos with the superheroes he created. Here, he takes a jab at Peter Parker as a grumpy old man called Gary, who is annoyed with Parker's antics around the neighbourhood.
Deadpool 2 (2018) — Uncredited artwork
His punchline: None
Review: Lee makes his cameo as a large-scale graffiti piece on the streets of Vancouver. Blink twice, and you would have missed it.
X-Men (2000) — Hot Dog Vendor
His punchline: None
Review: Lee conveys disbelief and side-eye scepticism as a hot dog vendor with his jaw on the floor, watching Senator Kelly drag his dissolving body across the shore in this old favourite.
Captain America: Civil War (2016) — FedEx Driver
His punchline: "Are you Tony Stank?"
Review: The ending scene of the movie is a bit of a downer so Lee adds some much-needed levity, screwing up Tony's name in a classic Starbucks-worthy manner. Yes, Tony, you ain't all that.
