New TV series and movies to watch in Singapore: Revenge of the Pontianak, and other foreign horror shows
Scared to death
Typewriter
Tagline: The legend of Bardez Villa comes to life.
Cast: Up-and-coming child actors Mikhail Gandhi, Sara Gesawat, Palash Kamble, Aaryansh Malviya, and Aarnaa Sharma steal the show.
Premise: Set in India's tropical coastal city of Goa, an intrepid group of young school kids and their trusty Labrador attempt to unravel the mystery of an infamous ghost that haunts a menacing Victorian home in their neighbourhood when clueless new family moves in.
Trivia: This series might mark the Netflix debut of most of the cast, but for Palomi Ghosh and Purab Kohli, this is their second time working together on a Netflix production since Sense 8.
First impression: While references to Netflix's Stranger Things and The Haunting of Hill House are understandable because of its child actors and horror genre, this Hindi show couldn't be any more different, proving that India's film and television scene is growing beyond Bollywood's flamboyance.
What the Internet is saying: "If anything happens to the dog, I'm going to go John Wick on y'all."
Release date: Stream it now on Netflix.
Green Frontier (Frontera Verde)
Tagline: Question the nature of reality.
Cast: Nelson Camayo, Juana del Rio, Miguel Ramos
Premise: Young female detective Helena heads into the thick, unchartered Amazonian jungles on the border of Brazil and Colombia to investigate a series of bizarre deaths involving young women. Strangely, one of the corpses show no signs of aging while the other's heart was removed without any evidence of blood spill. They soon realise that they are in over their heads when they meet Yua and Ushe, who the natives regard as "the eternals".
Trivia: This will be Netflix's first original Colombian production.
First impression: This Spanish language thriller evokes the sinister undertones of HBO's True Detective.
What the Internet is saying: "When the characters haven't watched Embrace of the Serpent and decide that it's a good idea to go into the Amazon."
Release date: It premieres 16 August on Netflix.
Revenge of the Pontianak
Tagline: Only you, forever.
Cast: Nur Fazura, Remy Ishak and Nadiah m Din
Premise: Set in rural Malaysia in 1965, a small village's excitement over the marriage of Khalid and Siti becomes short-lived when it is hit by a wave of horrific deaths and supernatural happenings. After being interrogated by the village, Khalid confesses to the murder of a young pregnant woman. She has returned as the vengeful vampiric Pontianak, but can the villagemen stop her?
Trivia: This movie marks the long-awaited return of acclaimed Singaporean director Glen Goei, a decade after his previous production, the 2009 murder mysteryThe Blue Mansion.
First impression: The classic horror tale of the Pontianak makes a comeback with Glen's revisionist spin and beautifully nostalgic saturated colours.
What the Internet is saying: "Can't wait to hear the film's theme song by Dato Sri Siti Nurhaliza!"
Release date: It hits theatres on 29 August.
