The hottest animated male characters of all time as seen from Disney, Pixar, and more
I'm aware that I run the risk of sounding hugely egoistical, but it must be said that multiple attempts were made to ruin my life this week. First, there was the shutdown of gyms as well as certain food establishments, which effectively dismantled my (already) meagre social life. Admittedly, this is for the good of an entire nation, but still. Then, Disney dropped Raya and the Last Dragon; an action-adventure piece with a 107-minute run time that, once again, strengthened my complex about real-life men. Namely, that they all pale in comparison to 2-D figures — in terms of personality, demeanor, and in just about every other aspect there is.
It's possible that the above statement has put me on the sh*t list of every living, breathing male on the Internet. But hear me out: you're dealing with a team of professionals here. I'm talking a team of animators who are, by and large, keenly aware of the desires of the female population and are paid to bring them to life. Do you stand a chance? No, but you can console yourself over the fact that said characters can't actually steal your girl. Will they, however, impart wholly improbable fantasies and expectations that you're going to have to try to live up to for the rest of your life? Well, yeah.
As crazy as it sounds, this is hardly a new phenomenon. Animation has never been a category designed exclusively for children, despite the connotation of cartoons. In recent years, it has evolved even further to encompass mature audiences (BoJack Horseman); the LGBTQI+ community (Steven Universe); and even, uh, conspiracy theorists (Adventure Time). Just like the bevy of live-action productions in the market, they are simply mediums intended to convey certain messages or lessons to their audience.
It stands to reason that as with most pieces of media we consume, the theory stands: Hot People can make anything seem remotely watchable. And so, we have provided a conclusive list of — objectively! — attractive animated men over the years. The list below details the front-runners, while the gallery above chronicles a wider selection pooled from a variety of sources. Hey, I aim to please. Get to scrolling.
Dimitri from Anastasia
To anyone who didn't have a crush on this dude: what were your formative years like? No, really. It was thanks to him that I have a Pavlovian-like response to guys who roll up their sleeves. They push up their cuffs and suddenly, I find them inexplicably hotter. Who allowed this?! Fox Animation Studios should be ashamed of themselves.
Li Shang from Mulan
The live-action rendition flopped because it didn't feature a shirtless man bellowing at other sweaty, shirtless people about the perils of being out of shape. No, you're not going to change my mind on this.
Tadashi Hamada from Big Hero 6
A tall, hardworking, and ridiculously charming robotics student voiced by Daniel Henney? Disney knew what they were doing, and I kind of resent them for it. Plus, he came up with a healthcare machine that looks like a giant marshmallow — that is big brain energy right there, folks.
Flynn Rider from Tangled
Everyone loves a bad boy who secretly turns out to have a good heart and is really bad at haircuts. I don't make the rules.
Jack Frost from Rise of the Guardians
I remain convinced that Jack Frost isn't actually an original character, but rather, Chris Pine rendered in animated form. With a really good dye job, which explains a lot re: the character's popularity.
