Mulan

Release date: 27 March 2020
Cast: Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Jet Li, Gong Li
What we know so far: The film is racking up some mixed reviews online because director Niki Caro is still exploring if music should be incorporated into the narrative. Some blowback has also been about its old-world aesthetics that's a departure from the nostalgia of the 1998 original.

Cruella

Release date: December 23, 2020
Cast: Emma Stone, Emma Thompson (rumoured)
What we know so far: Cruella will be the prequel and origin story of the infamous puppy-hating villain that was brough to life by veteran actress Glenn Close in the first 1996 live-action version. We hear that this remake will be set in the 1980s, and Emma Stone will be taking on a punk interpretation of the villain, which we have to admit, sounds a little more exciting.

The Little Mermaid

Release Date: Unknown
Cast: Halle Bailey, Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, Melissa McCarthy (rumoured)
What we know so far: There has been some serious racist online trolling regarding the casting of black singer-actress Halle in the lead role Ariel. Now, punters are speculating on the race of her on-screen prince. That's not all; the Internet has also chimed in on the casting for the role of Ursula. While it was originally rumoured to go to comedian Melissa McCarthy, rising American hip-hop star Lizzo has now become a serious contender for the role after some overwhelming support from her fans.

Lady and the Tramp

Release date: Initially 2019
Cast: Tessa Thompson, Justin Theroux, Janelle Monáe
What we know so far: Reportedly debuting on the all-new Disney+ streaming service this year, the live-action remake will feature real-life dogs and actors, unlike Lion King and Jungle Book that uses CGI renderings. Details of the cast has been released. We know that Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux will be lending their voice to Lady and Tramp respectively.

Snow White

Release date: Unknown
What we know so far: Director Marc Webb who is best known for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and 500 Days of Summer (2009), will be heading this remake of Disney's 1937 animated feature film. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul who were the guys behind the soundtracks of The Greatest Showman (2017) and Lala Land (2016) will be writing the songs for the movie. The Snow White story has seen spin-offs in the past (Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) and Enchanted (2007), so it'll be interesting to see which aesthetic direction this remake will take.

Pinocchio

Release date: Unknown
What we know so far: Since its development in 2015, two directors have stepped down and the project is currently in limbo. The only bit of info we have at the moment is that Tom Hanks will play the character of Geppetto, Pinocchio's creator and 'father'.

Tinkerbell

Release date: Unknown
What we know so far: Finding Dory (2016) screenwriter Victoria Strouse is writing the script while actress Reese Witherspoon is set to bring Tinkerbell to life.

Peter Pan

Release date: Unknown
What we know so far: Currently in pre-production, the fairytale adventure flick is headed by David Lowry, who worked on Pete's Dragon (2016) and A Ghost Story (2017).

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Release Date: Unknown
What we know so far: The Hunchback of Notre Dame's live-action remake will include the works of the original songwriters Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz from the 1996 animated film. The duo has previously collaborated and contributed towards the songs and lyrics of The Prince of Egypt (1998) and Pocahontas (1995). Tony-award winning playwright David Henry Hwang will be penning the script.
