If you're reading this article, we're guessing you would have already caught the epic showdown between Daenerys and Cersei Lannister at King's Landing during Game of Thrones' season eight highly anticipated episode five.

As expected, there were plenty of shots of Jon Snow looking handsome yet confused, fire rained from the sky courtesy of Drogon and some heavy bloodshed was provided by Daenery's army of Dothrakis and Unsullied.

Spoiler alert — more than a few of our favourite characters died: Jaime ended Euron's madness; Cersei and Jaime died in each other's arms, crying until the very end as the roof crumbled down on both of them; The Cleganebowl resulted in The Hound falling to his doom with his brother The Mountain; and let's not forget, the thousands of innocent common folk who were incinerated along the way.

Whether you're disappointed with Cersei's pathetic death scene or Daenery's meltdown, it was a lot of take in, and the show's fans had plenty of say.

We've rounded up the best memes, reactions and jokes from Instagram and Twitter for your pleasure, but first, here's ours.

Fans have been speculating about Daenery's "Mad Queen" turn for some time now. Her physical transformation alone has been jarring: her champagne blonde locks are now faded and withering and her fresh eyes have deep bags. While Sansa, Arya and Varys have spoken openly about their reservations, Jon and Tyrion have always remained resolute in their devotion to their Queen. After this episode's jaw-dropping carnage, how will the tides turn?

This episode was all about Lena Headey. Season after season, she has given us drop-dead performances that have been undermined by her villainy on the show. Consider her robbed if she doesn't get at least a nod at the Golden Globes next year.

Besides season seven's "Loot Train Attack", we've not seen much of Drogon's fire-breathing potential. In this episode, however, Daenerys lets him rip. We're talking about some killer evasive action to dodge the Scorpions that line King's Landing and Euron's Iron Fleet.

Yes, a lot of innocent civilians got burnt to ashes in this episode but these were the same bunch of people who cheered during Ned's execution and threw tomatoes at Cersei during her walk of shame. These people's allegiances flip flop more often than Jaime and they couldn't be trusted.

Looking towards the final sixth episode of the season, Daenerys is clearly looking to be the next one with her target on her head.

The impressiveness of episode five boiled down to the fact that it was shot from the perspective of the civilians, running for their lives but falling short. We're talking about mothers and their kids alongside the Golden Company's swordsmen. The Internet brought back a couple of memes from 2016 to encapsulate the chaos of it all.

Daenerys has gone through a world of emotions, betrayals and trials. In the early days of the show, she was admired for her feminine strength, but now, fans of the show are calling for her head. Her fate will be decided in episode six.
