Watch the teaser to Lana Condor's new Netflix rom-com To All The Boys I've Loved Before
"I was used to being invisible. No one was paying attention to what I was doing", begins the voiceover on the teaser of Netflix's teenage rom-com To The Boys I've Loved Before, an adaptation of Jenny Han's best-selling young adult romance novel of the same name. Well, that's all going to change now for Lana Condor.
The Vietnamese-American newcomer takes the lead role of Lara Jean Convey, a high school junior with a habit of writing, then stashing away, love letters to the boys she's had a crush on. There are five of them to be exact; a boy buffet of heartthrob's eyes, tousled hair, and all-American preppy vibes. One day, while running track, she finds out the letters she has written have been delivered to each one of the boys. She faints from the sheer shock of the news, and the drama of it all ensues.
Considering the success of Crazy Rich Asians' watershed moment in Hollywood for Asian-American representation, Condor's role in To The Boys I've Loved Before goes well beyond the book-smart Asian stereotype that has been propagated in storytelling centred around the complex ecosystem of a high school.
Condor embodies the romantic idealism of the protagonist adorably, giving the familiar coming-of-age narrative an irresistibly disarming rendition with her perpetually Bandung-tinged cheeks and girly innocence.
Since her debut on the big screen as Jubilee, a rambunctious mutant sidekick opposite Wolverine in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, all eyes are on Condor as she is set to make appearances in two more films this year: Alita:Battle Angel, and Summer Night. Next year, she stars as butt-kicking Saya Kuroki in Deadly Class, an action-thriller television series about disillusioned counterculture youth who are recruited into a storied high school for assassins.
From taking down a gang of men with her bare hands to swimming into the arms of a cutie-pie in a hot tub, Condor is at heart every bit the coquettish Asian face that has been a long time coming.
